Dead Fish in Your Pond: What to Do
A farm pond or backyard koi pond dying off is genuinely alarming to watch, and it's a different kind of situation than most of what I write about — this one's about water, not just what to do with a body. Here's what's actually going on, and what to do about it.
What Actually Causes This
Oxygen depletion is by far the most common cause of a fish die-off, and it's most likely to happen in the hottest part of summer. It can come from a dense algae bloom that suddenly dies back, several cloudy days in a row cutting off the photosynthesis that produces oxygen, or a real event called pond turnover — a cold rain suddenly mixing oxygen-poor bottom water with the surface layer all at once. Beyond oxygen, disease, overstocking, overfeeding-driven ammonia buildup, and poor water chemistry are real secondary causes.
A Few Fish vs. a Mass Die-Off
These point to genuinely different problems. A few fish of different species dying gradually, one at a time over several days, usually points to disease or ongoing water-chemistry stress. A sudden, severe mixing event can kill nearly every fish larger than an inch or two in a single night — that pattern points to an acute oxygen crash, not disease. Real warning signs of a low-oxygen event specifically: fish gulping at the surface, larger fish and bass dying first, and a visible change in water color.
Why Getting Them Out Quickly Actually Matters
This isn't just about appearance. Decomposing fish, along with uneaten feed and dying algae, consume more oxygen and release more ammonia into water that may already be in crisis — which can turn one die-off into a worse one. Netting dead fish out promptly is a real, practical way to keep a bad situation from compounding.
A Real Rule That's Genuinely Different for Fish
Washington's general dead-animal disposal rule — the same one I reference across most of this site, covering the 72-hour window and burial requirements — explicitly does not apply to fish. The regulation's own definition states plainly that a "dead animal" does not include a fish or other primarily aquatic animal. I couldn't find a specific state rule governing disposal of dead fish from a private, unconnected pond specifically, which is worth knowing honestly rather than guessing at a rule that may not exist.
Restoring the Water After a Die-Off
- Aerate immediately — a boat motor churning the surface or a pump cascading water works, and may need to continue for several days until fish stop gulping at the surface
- Test dissolved oxygen within a day or two to actually confirm what caused it
- Reduce or pause feeding temporarily
- A partial water exchange can help dilute ammonia buildup
Preventing the Next One
Avoid overstocking and overfeeding — only feed what fish actually consume in about five minutes. Keep aeration running, especially overnight in summer and under ice in winter; even a small amount of open surface area can prevent a winterkill. Ramp up aeration gradually in early spring rather than all at once, since a sudden change can itself trigger a turnover event. The real seasonal risk windows are spring turnover, mid-to-late summer heat, and winter ice cover.
